Overcoming Evil With Good: Choosing Light in a Dark Time

Overcoming Evil With Good: Choosing Light in a Dark Time

September 13, 20252 min read

Recent events in our beloved country, the United States of America, have stirred emotions of both deep sadness and righteous rage.

Sadness, because one of our most sacred rights—the right to free speech—was attacked. An innocent man, exercising that right, was murdered in cold blood.

Rage, because it is infuriating to watch a human life stolen simply for speaking truth, for standing as an American citizen with the freedom to voice his convictions.

These are heavy days. Many of us are asking: Where do we go from here? Are we to meet violence with violence? Is retaliation the only answer?

Scripture gives us a better way. Contrary to the world’s belief that every reaction must equal an opposite force, Jesus showed us something different. He met evil not with more evil, but with overwhelming good. On His way to the cross, He modeled how we are to respond when hatred and injustice stand before us.

Coming Together To Serve God

The Call to Choose Good

It’s hard to see the good when our nation feels covered in darkness. Yet, Jesus is the light. And His light teaches us that evil is not defeated by rage, but by love in action.

But what does this look like in everyday life? It doesn’t require a grand, camera-ready gesture for the world to applaud. Overcoming evil with good is far simpler and far more personal:

  • It’s choosing kindness in the face of hatred.

  • It’s turning the other cheek when false accusations are hurled.

  • It’s noticing the invisible—like the homeless neighbor—and offering a meal or even a kind word.

These acts may seem small, but they carry eternal weight. Each choice to love instead of hate is a direct blow against the darkness.

Mastering Our Emotions

As human beings, our emotions run deep. We grieve, we mourn, and yes—sometimes we want to strike back. But scripture reminds us: our feelings should not master us. Instead, we are called to master our emotions by surrendering them to Jesus.

Overcoming evil with good is not natural. It is spiritual. It is the choice to reach beyond the fire in our hearts and let Christ lead us with His overwhelming love.

Today, even as tears fall and anger stirs, let us not allow rage to dictate our actions. Instead, let us rise with intentional love. Let us be the ones who answer darkness with light.

Because when we choose to overcome evil with good, we walk in the footsteps of Jesus—and in Him, victory is already won.
